Costa Rican residency categories, explained without the jargon.

Most residency delays in Costa Rica are not caused by slow institutions. They are caused by applying under the wrong category, discovering it months later, and starting again.

Here is the plain version of the main routes.

Pensionado

For people with a lifetime pension. You show a guaranteed, ongoing pension income from a government or a qualified plan. The key word is lifetime: a pension that runs out in ten years is not the same thing to Migración as one that does not.

Rentista

For people with income that is not a pension. Typically demonstrated through a substantial deposit with a Costa Rican bank, structured so it pays out to you monthly over a fixed period. This is the route many remote workers and early retirees end up on.

Inversionista

For people investing in Costa Rica, most commonly in property, but also in a business or certain approved sectors. The investment has to be real, documented, and meet a minimum value.

Vinculo

For people with a family tie to a Costa Rican: marriage, or a Costa Rican child. Administratively lighter than the others in some respects, but scrutinised carefully.

Work based

Tied to a specific employer and role, and generally the hardest route, because the employer has to demonstrate why the position could not be filled locally.

What they all have in common

Whichever category you use, the documents you gather in your home country are the long pole: birth certificate, criminal record, marriage certificate where relevant, each apostilled, each with a validity window that starts ticking the moment it is issued.

People routinely gather these too early, then find they have expired before the file is complete. Sequence matters as much as the paperwork itself.

Which one fits you?

That depends on where your money comes from, whether you have a family tie here, and what you intend to do once you arrive. It is worth answering properly before you spend anything on apostilles, because the document list is different for each route.
